Foundation model vs CRM
A CRM is a database that shows what got typed in. A foundation model is read-time intelligence on raw text. Stapling them together and calling it AI is a category error.
What it does (the operator translation)
A CRM stores structured records — name, status, last contact, deal stage. The dashboard reflects what got entered. If the field is blank, the dashboard is blank. That's not a bug. It's the structural definition of a database.
A foundation model is the opposite shape. You hand it the raw text of your last 14 days — iPhone Messages, Gmail threads, Instagram DMs, a Compass One note — and it reads what's actually there. No schema. No status field. Just the words. Andrej Karpathy framed this on X in 2025 as Software 3.0 — English is the new programming language, the model is the runtime.

Why a working REALTOR cares (the breakpoint)
For a 12-deal agent at the NAR median of 10 sides, the foundation model wins because nobody was going to maintain clean CRM hygiene anyway. The structural assumption — you'll enter the data clean — doesn't hold. Above 25 sides with a second human on the file, you need a database. The model still helps you think.
What this is NOT (the category-flip)
A CRM with an AI add-on is NOT the same as a foundation model. The "AI" inside most real-estate CRMs is a wrapper. Vendor consensus on the phrase "AI-powered CRM" makes it signal-free. If you're paying for the wrapper without using the routing infrastructure underneath, you're paying for marketing.
