Portable model skill

Teach people to brief AI like a colleague.

Prompt literacy is not a bag of magic phrases. It is the ability to define the work, supply the source context, set boundaries, request a usable output, and inspect what came back.

By Ryan WannerPractical guideReviewed August 20, 2026

The five-field briefing card.

  1. 01

    Task

Name the result, the intended user, and the decision the work supports.

  2. 02

    Context

Supply the approved facts, examples, source documents, definitions, and current situation.

  3. 03

    Constraints

Define what must remain true, what the model cannot do, and where it must ask.

  4. 04

    Output

Specify structure, length, tone, fields, file type, or an example of the finished artifact.

  5. 05

    Review

Give the acceptance test, sources to compare, rejection conditions, and required receipt.

Turn a weak prompt into a teachable diagnosis.

Prompt-literacy coach

Coach me to improve this instruction without doing the task for me.

MY CURRENT INSTRUCTION
[paste it]

Ask one question at a time until you can identify:
1. the task and intended user
2. the source context the model is allowed to use
3. constraints, prohibitions, and decision boundaries
4. the required output structure
5. the quality test and completion receipt

Then show a before-and-after instruction, explain each change in plain language, and give me one deliberately broken version to diagnose. Do not add facts that I did not supply.

Situation

“Write a post for my new listing”

The task is vague, the listing facts are missing, prohibited claims are undefined, and no channel or review standard is named.

Useful output

A source-locked Instagram carousel brief with slide structure, fair-housing check, exact CTA, and a fact-by-fact review table.

Completion receipt

The learner can point to each of the five fields and explain which field fixed each failure in the first draft.

Research sources

Check the current rules, capabilities, and source basis.
