Sixteen hours to renew. Ten are yours to choose.
Every Tennessee renewal takes 16 hours of continuing education: the 6-hour TREC CORE plus 10 elective hours. Here's the rule, who it covers, and how to spend the electives on the skill that pays you back.

Who has to take CE in Tennessee?
Almost every active licensee. The exceptions are narrow, and one changed in 2026.
- Affiliate brokers and brokers
- 16 hours every renewal, 6 of them TREC CORE.
- Principal brokers
- From January 1, 2026, every principal broker with at least one affiliate takes CE. That includes grandfathered principal brokers.
- Recently upgraded brokers
- While you finish your 120 post-licensing hours, the 16-hour CE rule skips your first two renewals after upgrading. It returns at the third.
- Grandfathered licensees
- Affiliate brokers licensed before 1980 with no gaps, and brokers licensed before 2005, skip CE unless a principal broker rule applies. A lapse and reinstatement ends the status.
- Retired licenses
- No CE to renew in retired status. The 16 hours come due before you go back to active.

Tennessee CE questions
+How many CE hours do Tennessee real estate licensees need?
16 hours every renewal: 10 elective hours and the 6-hour TREC CORE. The hours have to be finished on or before the date your license expires.
+Is the TREC CORE course required?
Yes. 6 of your 16 hours must be the mandatory TREC CORE. The other 10 are electives you choose from Commission-approved courses.
+Do principal brokers have to take CE in Tennessee?
Starting January 1, 2026, every principal broker overseeing at least one affiliate has to take CE, including grandfathered principal brokers, under Tenn. Code Ann. §62-13-303(h).
+How does my CE get reported?
Your course sponsor loads your attendance into CE Broker, the Commission's official tracking system. Sponsors have 10 business days to upload it. A free CE Broker basic account shows your course history and compliance status.
